Obituary for Elizabeth Ida (House) Gehman

Elizabeth “Beth” Gehman, 92, of Landis Homes died on September 10, 2014. She was born on April 7, 1922, in Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada, a daughter of Earl Stanley House and Mina Frances Kelly House. She married Wayne Gehman in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on February 8, 1941; they treasured 68 years of married life together. She graduated from Lancaster Bible College in 1942, having received her earlier education in Fort Erie schools.

Over the years, Mrs. Gehman and her late husband, who was a minister of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), lived in the Midwest, Tennessee and Texas, where he served pastorates for 36 years. They functioned as an energetic, effective ministry team in the lives of those congregations. She also held various synod and presbytery positions in Presbyterian Women. In addition, she taught released time Bible classes and was a substitute school teacher. Mrs. Gehman enjoyed writing and was often a guest speaker at community and church events. Her passions included gathering family history, interior decorating, correspondence with family and friends, and oil painting. She was a member of the Highland Presbyterian Church, Lancaster.

Survivors include a son, Philip R. Gehman and his wife, Kay Lindaman Gehman, of Greer, South Carolina; daughters Diane E. Gehman and Colleen K. Gehman Klein of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren: Randall H. Gehman and his wife, Jennifer Schwark Henkle-Gehman, of Marietta, Georgia; Russell W. Gehman and his wife, Katherine Ericson Gehman, of Cedar Park, Texas; Kendall G. Klein and Nicole E. Klein of Austin; and nine great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Winnifred House Skinner and Kathleen House Cooper, a brother, Earl Richard House, and a grandson, Bradley Wayne Klein, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held in Austin, Texas, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Landis Homes Caring Fund, 1001 East Oregon Road, Lititz, PA 17543 or Highland Presbyterian Church, 1801 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
