Obituary for Daniel James Pitman Sr.

Daniel James  Pitman Sr.
Daniel James Pitman, 87, of Adamstown, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at the United Zion Retirement Community.

He was born in Swarthmore, Delaware County, to the late John Himes and Elsie (Anders) Pitman and was the husband of Marie E. (Nuckols) Pitman, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.

He was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ephrata, the Adamstown Lions Club, where he was secretary and past president, Knights of Columbus- Ephrata, and Sons of the American Revolution. He was founder of the United Support Group, an organization for mentally challenged adult children. He was also a Judge of Elections.

He was a private pilot and enjoyed flying, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A high school graduate. He attended the Keystone Secretarial School and worked as a sales representative for the H.J. Heinz Co. in Lancaster County for over 35 years until retirement in the late 1980's. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, John, husband of Jeanne (Larkins) Pitman of Wallingford, Elizabeth, wife of Edward Rogers of Glen Mills, Daniel Jr., husband of Sherri (Adair) Pitman, Denver, James, husband of Tracy (Jewell) Pitman of Cheboygan, MI, Kristina Pitman of Lititz; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marianna "Nan" Phillips of Paoli.

He was preceded in death by brother, Jack Pitman, and five sisters, Elsie Avilla, Katherine "Kitty" Frescoln, Doris Moist, Betty Jean Robbins and Christina Pitman.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebration at 11:00 am at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 320 Church Avenue, Ephrata, with Father John McGoughlin, C.SS.R. as celebrant. Final commendation and farewell at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata. Military honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard.
