Obituary for Elwood Shiffer

Elwood Shiffer, 92, a lifelong resident of Ephrata, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, February 15, 2013.

Born and raised in Ephrata, the youngest son of the late James and Hettie Rebecca (Weaver) Shiffer and was the husband of the late M. Loneta (Andes) Shiffer, “his high school sweetheart”, who passed away in 2001. Elwood attended Ephrata High School.

Elwood served in the United States Army during World War II. Elwood was a member of the Infantry Company with the 3rd Infantry Regiment. He served overseas for 12 months in the European Theatre of Operations. After returning home from his tour of duty, Elwood worked for the Ephrata Borough Police Department, where he started out as a patrolman. Then he was encouraged to take a test to become a Sergeant. After a few months, he took his civil service test and became a Lieutenant. He worked for 17 ½ years as Lt. Shiffer, and then acting Chief for 2 ½ years, retiring in March 1976.

He was a member of the Ephrata Church of the Brethren.

Elwood was a devoted husband to Loneta, and a loving father to their son Gregg. Elwood and Gregg loved to take daily walks on Church Avenue and watching the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies anytime they could.

Elwood is survived by a son Gregg A. Shiffer of Leola and close family friends, Jere and Kristen High and their children, Joshua, Jana, Ian, Jared and Jesse of Manheim.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, James Shiffer Jr., Walter W. Shiffer and a sister Ruth.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
